He returned in uniform to spend Christmas with his family… but found the house empty and a note: “We went on a cruise, take care of grandpa,” without imagining that he held the secret that would change everything.

PART 1

Mariana Salgado arrived in Metepec on the night of December 24th, her blue dress uniform from the Navy still immaculate, although the cold was biting her hands.

She had been away for 9 months, her throat tight with emotion at hugging her grandfather Tomás, the man who had raised her with atole, gentle scoldings and stories from when he worked in the train workshops.

Her parents’ house looked deserted from the street. There were no Christmas lights, no wreath on the door, and no carols playing.

Mariana thought that perhaps everyone was asleep. She put the key in, pushed the door open, and the icy air hit her face as if she had entered an abandoned warehouse.

In the kitchen, on the counter, there was a folded sheet of paper with his mother’s perfect handwriting.

“WE WENT ON A CRUISE. YOU TAKE CARE OF YOUR GRANDFATHER.”

Nothing else.

Not a « Merry Christmas. » Not a phone call. Not an explanation. Her 82-year-old grandfather, reduced to a household chore, like a bucket forgotten in the hallway.

Mariana felt her hands tremble. There was no tree in the living room. The curtains were closed. The thermostat read 8 degrees. And in that strange silence, like a house hiding shame, she heard a groan from the end of the hallway.

Her training moved her before fear. She ran to the guest room and flung the door open.

Don Tomás was in bed, dressed in his gray sweater and flannel pants, without blankets. His lips were purple, his skin almost white, and his fingers stiff. His cane was far away, behind a chair.

« Grandpa, it’s Mariana, I’m here, » she said, taking off her uniform jacket to cover him.

He barely opened his eyes. He didn’t seem to recognize her at first. Then he let out a short breath, as if he’d been waiting for someone to remember he was still alive.

Mariana called 911. While waiting for the ambulance, she covered him with every blanket she could find, rubbed his hands, and told him about her grandmother Lupita, her rajas tamales, and Sundays in the Alameda of Toluca.

The paramedics arrived quickly, but when they saw him they were visibly shaken.

« How long has it been like this? » one of them asked.

—I don’t know. My parents left him alone.

At the hospital, a doctor mentioned hypothermia, dehydration, and cardiac risk. A social worker spoke of elder neglect and domestic violence. Mariana heard those words with a burning sensation in her stomach.

The next morning, Don Tomás woke up. His voice was broken, but his eyes were no longer vacant.

« They don’t know about the papers, » he whispered.

Mariana leaned forward.

—What papers, grandpa?

He squeezed his fingers with unexpected force.

—Your grandmother hid them… where she prayed. Help me get justice.

And Mariana understood, with her blood running cold, that the cruise note was not the beginning of the betrayal, but the mistake that was finally going to uncover everything.
