I Was Thrilled to Meet My Daughter’s Fiancé—But the Moment I Opened the Door, I Knew I Wasn’t Ready for What I Saw
Part 1 — The Dinner I Had Imagined for Months
I had spent nearly the entire day in the kitchen.
The roast had been checked so many times that Bradley finally laughed and told me that if I opened the oven door again, I was going to scare the dinner into running away.
Normally, I would have laughed with him.
That afternoon, however, I was too nervous.
Our daughter, Kira, was finally bringing her fiancé home.
Not just Marcus, either. His parents were coming too.
For months, I had imagined this exact evening.
I pictured two families sitting around our dining room table, exchanging embarrassing childhood stories, laughing over dessert, and discussing wedding plans until late into the evening. I imagined discovering all the little things our families had in common.
But Kira had avoided arranging the meeting for reasons I could never understand.
Whenever I asked, she always had an excuse.
“They’ve been busy, Mom.”
“Marcus has a lot going on at work.”
