MY BROTHER STOLE MY ATM CARD AND WITHDREW ALL THE MONEY FROM MY ACCOUNT. AFTER DRAINING MY ACCOUNT, HE KICKED ME OUT OF THE HOUSE, SAYING, “YOUR WORK IS FINISHED, WE GOT WHAT WE WANTED, DON’T LOOK BACK AT US NOW.” PARENTS LAUGHED, “IT WAS A WISE DECISION.” BUT LITTLE DID THEY KNOW THAT ACCOUNT WAS ACTUALLY…

The call from the bank’s fraud department came the following morning, while I was still trying to figure out how to explain any of this to my supervisor without falling apart at the nurses’ station.
“Ms. Ashford? This is Regina, calling from the fraud investigations unit. We flagged unusual activity on one of your accounts overnight — a series of withdrawals and a large wire transfer that triggered an automatic review, given the account’s restricted status.”
“Restricted status,” I repeated.
“Yes, ma’am. This account is coded as a court-supervised trust disbursement account. Any withdrawal not initiated through the designated trustee process is automatically flagged for investigation. Were you aware of that provision?”
I sat down hard on the edge of Priya’s guest bed.
“I didn’t take that money,” I said. “My brother did. He used my card without permission.”
There was a brief pause on the line, the sound of typing.
“That matches what our system flagged,” Regina said. “This kind of account carries additional legal protections precisely because it’s court property, not a standard personal account. I’m going to need you to file a formal report, and I’d also recommend contacting your trustee directly. Ms. Voss will need to be looped in immediately, given the nature of this account.”
