OMG what are these I thought it was just rice scattered on my garbage can this morning… but then I looked closer and they were moving.
How to Prevent Their Return
- Double-Bag Food Waste: Meat scraps, fish bones, and dairy are the primary attractants. Keep these in smaller, sealed bags before putting them in the main garbage can.
- Keep the Bin Sealed: Ensure the lid fits tightly and doesn’t have cracks that allow flies to enter.
- Use Baking Soda or Vinegar: A sprinkle of baking soda at the bottom of your bin can help absorb moisture and neutralize odors that attract flies. Alternatively, a quick spray of diluted white vinegar around the rim can deter them from landing.
- Keep It Shaded: If possible, store your outdoor trash bins in a cool, shaded area. Heat accelerates the decomposition process and speeds up the life cycle of the flies.
Once you have sanitized the bin and removed the food source, the current infestation will end. If you notice flies continuing to congregate, consider checking for any other hidden sources of organic rot nearby.
