That day was the first time I had ever left my three-month-old daughter alone with my mother-in-law. Even for just a few

minutes. My husband, Daniel, always said that I had become an overly anxious mother.

“My mother raised three children,” he would say. “You can trust her.”

But my mother-in-law, Margaret, and I had never been particularly close. She was an extremely strict and quiet woman.

While I was pregnant, she rarely asked how I was feeling, and after Emma was born, she hardly ever held her.

So when she unexpectedly came to our house that afternoon and said, “Get some rest. I’ll watch the baby,” I was surprised.
