I left my baby with my mother-in-law for just a few minutes—When I returned, I saw a blue-and-yellow mark on her right arm, and my mother-in-law was gone
She looked down at Emma.
“When she cried out, I thought she was only hungry. But then I noticed that she wasn’t moving her right hand normally. I removed her clothing and saw the hair. It was wrapped so tightly that I couldn’t grip it with my fingers. I brought a pair of small scissors, carefully cut it, and immediately called emergency services.”
“Then why were you beside the trash can?”
“A tiny screw fell out of the scissors. I was afraid it would remain on the floor. I didn’t want someone to step on it later.”
I fell silent.
Only a few minutes earlier, I had been convinced that this woman had done something terrible to my child. But in reality, she had noticed something I hadn’t seen—even when I dressed Emma that morning.
The paramedic checked Emma’s arm again and smiled.
“Her circulation has returned to normal. The baby is doing well. Her grandmother acted very quickly.”
Margaret lowered her head.
“I should have called you immediately. But when I saw that blue mark, I felt the same fear I had experienced with Daniel. It was as though I had gone back thirty-five years.”
I sat beside her and carefully placed Emma in her arms.
She looked at me in surprise.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes,” I replied. “But this time, teach me how to check her fingers, toes, and wrists too.”
Margaret’s eyes filled with tears, but she smiled.
That day, I realized that the reason she had always kept her distance wasn’t because she didn’t care. She hadn’t avoided her granddaughter because she didn’t love her.
She was afraid of making another mistake.
A few hours later, the color of Emma’s arm had completely returned to normal. Only a thin, pale line remained, and even that disappeared the following morning.
The photograph I took that evening, while Emma slept peacefully in her grandmother’s arms, became our family’s favorite picture.
Because that day, I didn’t only notice a blue-and-yellow mark on my baby’s arm.
I finally saw the love my mother-in-law had hidden for years behind her strict and silent expression.
