I left my baby with my mother-in-law for just a few minutes—When I returned, I saw a blue-and-yellow mark on her right arm, and my mother-in-law was gone
when I noticed the strange mark on her right arm. Just above her wrist, the skin had turned blue and yellow. The mark
formed a narrow circle all the way around her arm. My heart seemed to stop. That mark hadn’t been there a few minutes
earlier.
“Margaret!”
I ran into the hallway and opened the bathroom door. It was empty.
There was no one in the bedroom either. Finally, I saw her near the back door. She was kneeling beside the trash can,
searching for something on the floor.
“What did you do to my baby?” I shouted.
She turned around. Her hands were trembling, and her face was paler than usual.
“Listen to me…”
“There’s a mark on her arm! I left her alone with you for only five minutes!”
Margaret stood up, but I stepped backward, pressing my baby against my chest.
“Don’t come any closer.”
