Looking back, I think she believed it enough for both of us.

Mom’s expression softened.
“Eva, that girl deserved kindness too.”
My throat tightened.
“Put the cardigan down.”
“Mom.”
“Put it down.”
I dropped it onto the bed.
“That dress isn’t too much,” she said. “It’s exactly enough.”
I almost threw the reunion invitation away.
Part of me wanted to pretend those years never happened.
