I almost laughed.

If only she knew.

They invited me to sit with them.

Curiosity won.

So I did.

For twenty minutes, I listened.

They talked about careers, marriages, children, mortgages, vacations, and social media.

Then Madison arrived.

She hadn’t changed much.

The same confidence.

The same loud voice.

The same ability to make every room revolve around her.

“Please tell me you saved me a seat,” she announced.

Ashley laughed.

Madison sat down beside me and looked me over.

“Well, thank God. This table needed help.”

I smiled politely.
