I caught my husband sleeping with my brother’s wife, so I quietly swapped the lubricant in his bag for industrial glue.
For the first time, genuine fear entered her voice.
“You control this system,” I said.
“I did.”
Cabinet locks began clicking open one after another.
Files slid from drawers as internal mechanisms activated. Papers spilled across the floor.
On the monitor, a countdown appeared.
TEN MINUTES UNTIL ARCHIVE PURGE.
Brandon seized my mother’s arm.
“Who else has access?”
“No one.”
The speakers above us crackled.
Then my father’s voice filled the room.
Older than I remembered.
Tired, but unmistakable.
“Eleanor,” the recording said, “if you are hearing this, then our daughter has finally opened the red file.”
My mother went completely still.
My heart hammered.
The recording continued.
“You believed you were protecting the company. You believed you were protecting her. But control is not protection, and secrets do not remain buried simply because we build rooms beneath them.”
My mother whispered his name.
The voice continued.
“The girl must be told who she is. And our daughter must be told the truth about the night I d/i/ed.”
The recording ended.
Silence followed.
Then a second hidden door opened at the back of the archive room.
Cold air rushed through it.
