I caught my husband sleeping with my brother’s wife, so I quietly swapped the lubricant in his bag for industrial glue.
“You humiliated this family when you taught your children to grieve someone who was still alive.”
Arthur stared at her.
Then at Brandon.
Finally, at me.
“I did everything for the company.”
I shook my head.
“You did everything to become the company.”
The police officer received a call. His posture changed as he listened.
When he ended it, he looked at Arthur.
“State investigators are on their way.”
Charles Reddick tried to leave.
Daniel stopped him.
“The state investigators will want you too.”
In the silence that followed, my mother reached for my hand.
Warm.
Real.
Alive.
The story should have ended there.
The villain exposed. The missing mother restored. The company saved.
But as Arthur was escorted from the terminal, he turned toward me and said something that made my triumph disappear.
“Elena, ask Evelyn who your biological father is.”
PART 6 — THE LAST LIE MY MOTHER KEPT
The room became so quiet that I heard the old ceiling fan clicking with each rotation.
I looked at my mother.
She did not deny it.
That frightened me more than Arthur’s words.
Brandon stared between us.
“What is he talking about?”
Mom closed her eyes.
Arthur smiled as the officers guided him toward the exit.
“One more family secret,” he said. “Enjoy.”
The door shut behind him.
