I caught my husband sleeping with my brother’s wife, so I quietly swapped the lubricant in his bag for industrial glue.
But this scheme was larger than any of us.
My phone rang.
It was Mara.
“We found the share transfers,” she said. “Arthur has been selling to Halcyon for four years. They now control thirty-eight percent.”
“How much does the family control?”
“Officially? Forty-one.”
“And unofficially?”
“If Arthur pledged additional shares as collateral, Halcyon may already have effective control.”
“When is the sale?”
“There’s an emergency board meeting scheduled for noon.”
I checked the time.
9:06.
“Can we stop it?”
“Only if you prove fraud before the vote.”
“We have original documents.”
“Bring them to headquarters.”
“We’re heading to Pueblo first.”
“Elena, that meeting may be your last chance.”
“My mother is in Pueblo.”
Mara fell silent.
Then she said, “Bring her back.”
The freight terminal appeared at the end of a deserted industrial road.
Its faded sign read:
