I caught my husband sleeping with my brother’s wife, so I quietly swapped the lubricant in his bag for industrial glue.

Julian continued quickly.

“He knew I had debts. He knew my consulting firm was failing. He offered to clear everything if I married you.”

A cold sensation spread through my chest.

“Our marriage was arranged?”

“No. Not exactly. You already liked me. Arthur simply made sure I became the man you would choose.”

Every memory shifted.

The charity event where Julian and I had supposedly met by chance.

The business conference where our hotel rooms had somehow ended up on the same floor.

The sudden interest he had shown in the books I loved.

The way my father had encouraged me to give Julian a chance.

None of it had been accidental.

“What did he want from you?” I asked.

“To keep you away from company operations.”

Brandon turned to me.

“But you were CFO when you married him.”

“For eight months,” Julian said. “Then Elena resigned.”

I remembered the pressure from every direction.

Julian telling me the stress was ruining our marriage.

My father insisting the company needed a leader who could “focus entirely on the business.”

The endless discussions about starting a family.

I had resigned voluntarily.

At least, I had believed I had.

Julian stared at me.

“Arthur said Brandon would eventually become CEO. You were smarter, but he thought the board preferred you. He needed you out of the way without creating a public fight.”

Brandon stepped back as though the accusation had struck him physically.

“I never asked for that.”

“I know,” I said.

My voice sounded calm, but beneath it, something enormous was breaking.

Julian continued.

“The shell companies were supposed to move enough assets to weaken your voting position. Arthur planned to consolidate control under Brandon’s name.”

Brandon shook his head.

“That makes no sense. Dad already controlled the majority.”

“Not anymore.”

Julian’s answer was immediate.

“He began selling shares years ago. Secretly.”

I exchanged a glance with Brandon.

Our father had always claimed that the Vance family retained controlling ownership.

“How much did he sell?” I asked.

“I don’t know. But more than anyone realizes.”

My phone vibrated.

It was Mara Chen, our lead forensic accountant.

I answered on speaker.

“Elena,” Mara said, “we found something.”

Her tone made Brandon and me look at each other.
