I caught my husband sleeping with my brother’s wife, so I quietly swapped the lubricant in his bag for industrial glue.

“In New Mexico. Under another name.”

“Why didn’t she come back?”

“Because Arthur threatened to frame her for financial crimes. He had forged enough evidence to send her to prison for decades. She believed staying away was the only way to protect you.”

I wanted to scream at Mrs. Dalca. I wanted to demand why she had not told us.

But the timer kept counting.

“We leave now,” she said.

We filled three bags with the original letters, patents, board minutes, and recordings. Mrs. Dalca led us through a service corridor and out a rear entrance.

We had just reached the garden when a heavy metallic sound came from inside the house.

The archive door sealed.

A hiss followed.

No flames. No explosion.

But when Brandon looked through the study window, white chemical foam was filling the hidden room, soaking the files we had left behind and dissolving ink from paper.

My father had designed the system to erase evidence, not d/e/stroy the house.

Controlled.

Quiet.

Almost elegant.

Exactly like him.

We reached our car.

The black SUV rolled forward and stopped across the driveway.

A man stepped out.

Tall. Gray suit. No visible we/@/pon.

He raised both hands.

“My name is Daniel Mercer. I represent Evelyn Vance.”

My heart pounded.

“Where is she?”

“She is waiting for you.”

“Then take us to her.”

Daniel’s expression tightened.

“I can’t.”

Brandon moved toward him.

“You just said she was waiting.”

“She was.”

The word chilled me.

“Was?”

Daniel glanced toward the road.

“Arthur found her safe house six hours ago.”

My grip tightened around the bag of letters.

“Did he hurt her?”

“No. He took her.”
