I caught my husband sleeping with my brother’s wife, so I quietly swapped the lubricant in his bag for industrial glue.

“Where?”

Daniel looked toward the eastern sky, where sunlight was beginning to break across the mountains.

“To the place where Vance Global began.”

PART 5 — THE WOMAN WHO CAME BACK FROM THE D/E/@/D

The place where Vance Global began was not a glass tower in Denver.

It was an abandoned freight terminal outside Pueblo.

According to Daniel Mercer, my mother had purchased the property with money inherited from her grandmother. She had written the original routing software in a tiny office above the loading bay while Brandon and I slept in portable cribs beside her desk.

My father had removed every trace of that history.

By 8:30 a.m., we were driving south in Daniel’s SUV.

Mrs. Dalca sat in the back beside Brandon. I held the bag of letters on my lap.

Daniel explained that he had been my mother’s attorney for twelve years.

“She contacted me after Arthur had her declared legally d/e/@/d,” he said. “By then, she had gathered evidence of the fraudulent transfers, but Arthur had witnesses prepared to testify against her.”

“Why didn’t she contact us directly?” Brandon asked.

“She tried.”

He nodded toward the letters.

“Arthur intercepted every message. He monitored your phones, your schools, and eventually your professional accounts.”

I remembered my father insisting that Vance Global security manage all our devices.

Protection, he called it.

It had been surveillance.

“Why now?” I asked. “Why move the assets into her trust?”

“Because Evelyn learned Arthur planned to sell Vance Global.”

“To whom?”

“A private consortium led by Halcyon Freight.”

Our largest competitor.

A sale would have d/e/stroyed thousands of jobs and broken the company into pieces.

“She began redirecting the stolen assets,” Daniel continued, “not to take them, but to protect them from the sale.”

“Serena’s relatives were involved,” Brandon said.

“Yes. They provided names for several shell companies in exchange for payment. Serena believed the money belonged to Julian.”

I thought of Serena crying in the hospital.

For months, I had viewed her only as the woman who betrayed my brother and entered my marriage like a thief.

Now I wondered how much she truly understood.

Not that ignorance excused her.
